Doubling Maximum Prison Term For Armed Robbery Conviction: Response

Struggling to place any semblance of control upon the unmanageable aspect of crime, legislators often reach well beyond what is deemed either logical or feasible, not the least of which includes increasing prison time rather than working toward other alternatives to rehabilitating the criminal while alleviating overcrowding. Two primary issues stand in the way of doubling an armed robbery sentence as a viable approach: warehousing convicts does nothing more than add to an already overloaded penal system, remove the opportunity for rehabilitation and cost taxpayers exorbitant amounts of money. California, a progressive state that made a similar attempt to address its spiraling drug problem, implemented the Three Strikes program whereby minimum time became mandatory for those found with what has historically been considered as insignificant usage. Is the notion of increased sentences for negligible drug use -- or armed robbery -- expected to decrease recidivism? Or is the idea merely attempting to curb activity until such a time as when other social policies provide a more effective alternative? Two of the most viable alternatives to this proposed legislation include privatizing the penal system and rehabilitating criminals. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
