Michael Moore: Speaking Out At The Oscar Ceremony Was His Duty As An American

6 pages in length. Utilizing the fundamental tools of free speech and an obligation to question leadership as they exist in a civilized, democratic society, Michael Moore suspected the backlash of criticism he would reap for making his highly controversial film Bowling For Columbine. Indeed, whenever any conventional American institution is placed under attack – particularly by a lowly individual with a penchant for causing trouble – the ripple of response is felt throughout every sector of society. Moore's film, for which he won an Oscar and ultimately served as a springboard for his startling antiwar speech at the awards ceremony, reflects the basic tenets of democracy at its strongest; that Moore displayed the tremendous courage necessary to question leadership and not back down in the wake of such condemnation – even to the point of potentially being blacklisted from Hollywood by some ideological extremists - speaks to the need for a greater show of antiestablishment behavior if America thinks its social and political problems are ever going to be solved. Bibliography lists 9 sources.
