How Do Different Authors Deal With The Idea Of "Identity" Within The Gay Society In Pre-Stonewall America?

5 pages in length. The history of gay and lesbian lifestyles has been fraught with a social defiance much like that which was present during the Salem witch hunts. Not only has this particular subpopulation been labeled 'perverts' and 'subversives,' but they have been forced to prove their collective right as members of society to pursue and uphold an identity no differently than their heterosexual counterparts. This identity came under a great deal of scrutiny during pre-stonewall America, a fact made quite evident by the way in which various authors of the time dealt with the concept.
