Women's Roles in Mozambique

is Mozambique. World Bank statistics show the
average Mozambican making about $80 in 1994. In
1975, after a successful but brutal 15-year war of
independence, Mozambique entered a brief period of
euphoria before turning on itself With the
support of what was then Rhodesia and the
apartheid government in South Africa, the Renamo
(the Portuguese abbreviation for Mozambican
National Resistance) guerrilla movement began
laying waste to much of the country with the
explicit aim of forcing the ruling Frelimo
(Front for the Liberation of Mozambique)
government from power.
